Chapter 22

It was down to the wire. Jeff and Rhonda’s thirteenth anniversary had arrived, and he still hadn’t found the vintage daisy pin he’d planned to give her. He had called Russ this morning to let him know that he wouldn’t be at the restaurant when it first opened and might not arrive until closer to noon. He’d wished his wife a happy anniversary and reminded her that they had dinner reservations at the Chalet in the Valley restaurant for seven o’clock that evening. Jeff had also given Rhonda a kiss before she headed out the door for work half an hour ago. Since that time, he’d searched for the pin again but had finally given up and was now heading down the road toward the Troyers’ Memory Keepers.

Jeff looked forward to this evening and the meal he and Rhonda would share. Although the restaurant’s address was in Millersburg, the building was actually closer to the quaint village of Charm and overlooked the Doughty Valley. Jeff hoped things would go well tonight and that he and Rhonda would have a memorable evening.

A short time later, Jeff pulled up in front of Memory Keepers. When he entered the building and saw Orley sitting on a stool behind the front counter, he gave a wave and went directly to the spot where he’d last seen the vintage jewelry. But the items he’d hoped for were not there. Thinking they might have been moved, Jeff looked at the nearby tables but saw nothing there either. After a few minutes of moving things around and checking more places, he stepped up to Orley and asked if they still had some vintage jewelry in the store.

The pleasant Amish man shook his head. “Sorry, but we sold the last few pieces yesterday.”

Jeff felt sweat leaching out of him from the frustration he felt and sagged against his side of the counter. “That’s a disappointment. I had hoped to buy my wife a special piece of jewelry from what I’d seen in here before. Our anniversary is today, and I want to give her a nice gift when we go out to dinner this evening.”

Orley’s eyebrows rose slightly as he leaned both elbows on the counter. “I thought you were going to give Rhonda that antique daisy pin you found at the yard sale the four of us attended.”

“I had planned to, but now I can’t remember where I put it.” Jeff drew in a quick breath. “Guess now I’ll have to give Rhonda something else.”

“Does it have to be vintage?” Orley questioned.

Jeff shrugged. “I suppose not, but since she likes daisies, I thought …”

“You might find something nice in one of the gift shops here in Walnut Creek or the village of Berlin.” Orley drummed his fingertips on the countertop. “With all those stores catering to the tourists, you’re bound to find something to choose from.”

“Yeah, I guess.” Jeff glanced around, allowing his gaze to roam over the various tables, shelves, and cabinets filled with numerous antiquated items.
